How Nimble Are You?

Talking Logistics

Demand and supply are the most powerful forces in most of our lives. Demand for our products drives up our need to supply them to customers. But as we try to flow more products through the supply chain, what happens when the existing infrastructure can’t keep up with the growing demand? A Shipment Stuck at Port. This conundrum struck me recently as I watched an ocean shipment spend as much time at a port as it did on the water.

Automated Order Processing and Proactive Inventory Management

Speaker: Irina Rosca, Director of Supply Chain Operations, Helix

Organizations need to focus on demand driven supply planning, utilizing real time information on customer orders from all marketplaces (e-commence, Amazon - or other online retailers, and point of sale data from brick and mortar). Focusing on this information once per month during the S&OP meeting is too late for all business units to align. Companies should have seamless integration between order entry, inventory management, forecasting and supply planning models and purchase order status to sense risk, pull levers to mitigate potential risk, and communicate within and outside the organization. This is especially important for new product releases, in store programs or promotions (sales, end caps, PDQ. etc) or online promotions (company run or 3rd party). Depending on total supply chain lead time, not having real time visibility and analysis of this information can significantly affect sales and the bottom line.

Asset Management Considerations for Carriers

Logistics Viewpoints

The asset management needs for carriers can be both varied and complex. And these needs can differ depending on the type of carrier. Local and regional delivery companies’ requirements can be very different from that of over-the-road equipment. This often means that trucks, tractors, trailers, vans, and other equipment must be spec’d and maintained differently, depending on application, which poses unique challenges for enterprise asset management (EAM) and other asset management systems.
