In 1971, researchers established the Terminal Interface Processor (TIP) for dialing into ARPANET from individual computer terminals. In 1984, CompuServe came out with the Electronic Mall, which allowed its users to purchase products from approximately 110 different merchants. By 1997, over seven million homes had Minitel terminals.
