United States rail carloads and intermodal volumes again saw annual gains for the week ending April 14, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
Carloads headed up 1.6% annually to 258,123, which trailed the week ending April 7 at 261,898 and the week ending March 31 at 265,470.
The AAR said that nine of the ten carload commodity groups it tracks were up annually, including motor vehicles and parts, up 2,609 carloads, to 18,838; metallic ores and metals, up 2,174 carloads, to 24,785; and nonmetallic minerals, up 1,420 carloads, to 37,834. The lone commodity group to posted an an annual decline was coal, which was down 6,265 carloads, to 75,778.
Intermodal containers and trailers rose 6.9% compared to the same period a year ago at 276,075. This was ahead of the 263,007 units for the week ending April 7 and the 269,281 for the week ending March 31.
Through the first 16 weeks of 2018, U.S. rail carloads are up 0.2% at 3,816,220, and intermodal units are up 5.4% at 4,035,463.
