Diesel average comes in at $2.966 per gallon for second straight week, reports EIA

This week’s average, at $2.966, matched the week of February 4, and was up $0.001 compared to the $2.965 average for the weeks ending January 28 and January 21, respectively.


Following a week in which the national average price per gallon of diesel gasoline saw a miniscule sequential gain, this week’s national average was flat, according to data issued this week by the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration (EIA).

This week’s average, at $2.966, matched the week of February 4, and was up $0.001 compared to the $2.965 average for the weeks ending January 28 and January 21, respectively. And it also marks the fifth consecutive week the average has fallen below the $3 per gallon mark since coming in at $2.972 per gallon the week of March 19, 2018.

Prior to the week of January 28, when the national diesel average hit $2.965 for the second week in a row, the national average had fallen a cumulative 42.9 cents over 14 consecutive weeks of declines. Prior to that stretch, the weekly average price was $3.394 for the week ending October 15, which marked the single highest weekly average going back to the week of December 15, 2014, when it was at $3.419 per gallon, according to EIA data, and the average for the week ending October 8 was $3.385.

On an annual basis, this week’s $2.966 average is down $9.7 cents.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil is currently trading at $53.80 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, which is down compared to $53.98 a week ago at this time.
