United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week ending May 15, saw annual gains, for the week ending May 15, according to data issued this week by the Association for American Railroads (AAR).
Rail carloads—at 242,806—headed up 31.6% annually, topping the weeks ending May 8 and May 1, at 236,019 and 240,858, respectively.
AAR reported that all 10 carload commodity groups it tracks posted annual gains, including: coal, up 22,374 carloads, to 68,327; motor vehicles and parts, up 9,598 carloads, to 12,466; and metallic ores and metals, up 9,592 carloads, to 23,686.
Intermodal containers and trailers—at 291,066—saw a 25.6% annual increase, topping the week ending May 8, at 287,290, and trailing the week ending May 1, at 299,809.
Through the first 19 weeks of 2021, AAR reported that U.S. rail carloads are up 5.2% annually, to 4,341,762, and intermodal units are up 18.5% annually, to 5,371,854.
