Safety Tips for your Warehouse

Warehouses are an integral part of any business. This is where the company’s products are stocked, and moved once an order is placed; hence safety of a warehouse is of utmost importance. Not only that, the safety concerns should also be extended to the staff working at the warehouse as it’s impossible to run the system without employees. The operation of heavy machines, lifting stock, arranging it, most of them are then by these staff. Here are a few safety tips that can help you in the long run.

Staff should be aware of the surroundings:  Every warehouse will have forklifts to lift the crates and pallets. It is important that staff is aware not to come in way of the forklift to avoid any collision. Any collision with a forklift may injure people nearby and also damage the consignment.

Lift the consignment properly: Lifting a consignment is a technique and all the staff should be trained on it to be safe while on the job. If they are not properly trained, they might be at risk of hurting their back over time. Carrying the package close to your body is the key will reduce the chances of getting hurt

Keeping the work area tidy: Keeping the place tidy and neat will help to trip or slip, as the warehouse floors are of concrete and might hurt badly in case of any fall. Also, ensure that there is no clutter on the floor that will cause a fall. Regular inspection is necessary to have a check on the floor’s tidiness and cleanliness. One can also follow the 5S methodology, which is a Japanese way of organizing a workplace.

Correct usage of warehouse equipment: The use of modern equipment in the warehouse ensures operational efficiency, but the staff should know how to operate them, that’s why licensed users can only use the forklift. There should be a mock drill for staff during regular intervals to understand the safety protocols.

Warehouse safety procedures posters:  All the safety procedures can be converted into picture posters showing proper lifting techniques, etc., and posted across the warehouse to remind staff to follow them regularly.

Provide proper protective equipment: Each staff should be wearing safety gear based on their work and what they do. Safety equipment, such as gloves, eyewear, boots, hard hats, hi-vis jackets, etc. should be provided to each staff separately. Ensure that they wear all these before starting their work on the floor.

First-aid kits: Injuries are common in a warehouse; hence a first-aid kit should always be a part of the warehouse. Also, ensure that none of the medicines are expired, if yes, then it’s time to replace it. Band-Aid, gauzes, ointments for sprain, and paracetamol are a must in the first-aid kit.

Warehouse safety is important hence timely meetings with staff will open up their concerns and it will help the management to take proactive decisions and make changes to the process. Prevention is better than cure is what needs to be applied in all the warehouses for creating a better and safe working environment.
