Logistics Tech Summit: Creating frictionless driver experience with in-cab tech

Schneider CIO: ‘We want the drivers to focus on driving and take away any need for other distractions’

This fireside chat recap is from FreightWaves’ North American Logistics Tech Summit on Wednesday.

FIRESIDE CHAT TOPIC: A look at the future of in-cab technologies

DETAILS: Schneider National’s executive vice president and chief information officer discusses the in-cab technologies the company uses to create a safer, less intrusive driving experience for its employees.

SPEAKER: Shaleen Devgun, EVP and CIO for Schneider National Inc.

BIO: Devgun has served as EVP and CIO since 2015. He previously served as vice president for strategy, planning and solution delivery. Prior to joining Schneider, Devgun spent over a decade in management consulting roles with DiamondCluster International and Deloitte.

KEY QUOTES FROM DEVGUN:

“Driving is hard enough. It’s a hard profession but a noble profession. …  We want the drivers to focus on driving and take away any need for other distractions. For the longest time, all of us would ask the driver, ‘What are you doing now?’ ‘What are you doing next?’ Those are things now that technology makes possible [to answer]. … I don’t need to bother the driver with those kinds of questions.”

“Our drivers have been very complimentary [of our technology] and they have critiqued us with gusto when we have deserved it. … I think there are areas where the drivers were absolutely uncomfortable. … There are some [technologies] that we decided to say, ‘We believe there was some benefit but the negatives were more than the benefit so let’s table it.’”

“We believe we provide a best-in-class driver experience. I think that goes a long way in retaining drivers. … We want Schneider to be the destination for the best of the very best. We want to make sure we are providing the most efficient, frictionless experience in the cab that the industry has to offer. That’s the goal we set for ourselves.”
