Mercedes-Benz takes to rail to move cars to China

Russia’s railway monopoly RZD has delivered the first batch of finished Mercedes-Benz vehicles from Bremerhaven, in Germany, to Chongqing in China. The new route, which is informally referred to as the new Silk Road, has already proved a viable alternative to ocean shipping vehicles from Europe to China, which takes up to 60 days. There were 112 cars in the inaugural shipment, which were loaded onto rail cars at Kaliningrad in collaboration with logistics provider Gefco.

Gefco edges nearer flotation

Gefco has reaffirmed it is looking to make a public offering on the Euronext Paris stock exchange in 2019. Russian Railways, which has a majority stake in the transport and logistics provider, said it was considering a partial reduction of its 75% stake to below 50%. Gefco’s former owner and partial stakeholder Groupe PSA, will reduce its stake to below 10% of capital should the flotation go ahead.

PD Ports has signed a multi-million pound five-year bulk handling contract with plaster and plasterboard products manufacturer British Gypsum at Teesport. British Gypsum will bring shipments from Europe directly into Teesport every two weeks where it will be stored in a new bulks warehousing facility.
