Retail sales in January are slow to start to the year

Commerce reported that its advanced estimate of U.S. retail and food service sales for January were down 0.3% compared to December at $492 billion but were up 3.6% on an annual basis. Trucking Conditions Index from FTR reflects tight capacity and high rate environment

For December, the most recent month for which data is available, the TCI was 9.2, which was well ahead of November’s 5.48 and in line with October’s 9.48. FTR said that December’s reading reflects a full capacity environment that is paced by ongoing strength in freight demand. In one of the first reports dealing with detention the U.S. DOT has concluded that time spent detained at shipper or receiver facilities cuts truck driver pay by between $1.1 billion and $1.3 billion annually. An underlying concern is also the effect on driver safety. An extra 15 minutes spent detained beyond the standard two-hour window causes industry crash risk to climb 6.2 percent, the DOT has estimated.

Eight New 11,000 TEU Container Ships Ordered by Evergreen

Taiwanese shipping giant Evergreen Marine Corporation (EMC) has recently signed an agreement with Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to order eight new container ships with a capacity of 11,000 TEUs. Green Compass, a subsidiary of Evergreen, will own four of the vessels, while Evergreen in Hong Kong will receive the other four. BMW extends contract at Cuxport

BMW has extended its contract with Rhenus Worldwide at the northern German port of Cuxport for the processing of finished vehicles destined for export to the UK and Scandinavia.
