Debunking 7 Common Outsourcing and Fulfillment Myths

It’s true: outsourcing and fulfillment can be pretty tough subjects to tackle. Misconceptions spread fast, and, before you know it, you’re left with an incomplete and sometimes confusing picture — and not in a Picasso sort of way.

But, like the MythBusters that came before us, we’re here to put the rumor mill to rest. Whether you’re already partnered up with a third-party logistics company or still looking for the perfect match, separating fact from fiction is one of the hallmarks of any savvy business owner.

So, without any further ado, let’s get cracking!

#1. Fulfillment Isn’t Worth the Hassle

After countless hours spent on market research, product development, and branding, order fulfillment may seem like an afterthought. We get it — it’s nowhere near the most glamorous part of business ownership, but that’s what makes it so important. Packing boxes and running to the post office will likely be manageable when you’re just starting out, but what happens when you scale? Regardless of how you slice it, a solid order fulfillment strategy is the backbone of your business.

#2. Outsourcing Isn’t SMB-Friendly

What if we told you that outsourcing was for small and mid-sized businesses? You read that right! Instead of being a barrier, think of outsourcing as a bridge that allows you to take your company to the next level.

It’s all thanks to the numerous resources 3PLs have at their disposal, like….

  • Automated warehousing
  • Discounted shipping and packaging rates
  • International capabilities
  • Multiple warehouse facilities
  • Order, inventory, and warehouse management software

And so on! Of course, mileage varies depending on your fulfillment partner, but the basic idea is that more manpower results in more opportunities for growth. If you ask us, that sounds perfect for SMBs!

#3. Customers Will Know I’m Using a 3PL

Unless you tell your customers directly, they will have no reason to suspect that you’re outsourcing, especially if you invest in creating a customized unboxing experience. In fact, they’ll be so distracted by how quickly they received their orders and how much they love the products inside that they won’t even think about fulfillment… or, in all likelihood, know what it is in the first place.

#4. My Fulfillment Strategy Is Too Complicated for a 3PL

No matter how complex you think your fulfillment strategy is now, a seasoned logistics partner should be able to seamlessly integrate and scale your current process(es). Additionally, a fresh set of eyes is a great tool for spotting potential cracks and building upon an existing foundation.

Still in doubt? Talk it out! Every business is unique, so don’t be afraid to bring your concerns to the table and test your current or future 3PL on their answer.

#5. The 3PL Will Take Over My Business

Handing over your life’s work is a big ask, but one thing you will absolutely not have to worry about is a 3PL trying to call the shots on what you do and don’t do with your business. A 3PL specializes in logistics, and logistics only — it’s even in their name! Lastly, as a third-party logistics provider, they’re providing a service, which means you always have the final say.

#6. The 3PL Won’t Be as Invested in My Growth

Here’s the thing about 3PLs: when you grow, they grow. When they grow, you grow. It’s this kind of mutually beneficial relationship that makes outsourcing such a win-win scenario for expanding businesses. Helping you thrive is the name of the game, and a 3PL worth their salt is playing to win.

#7. Outsourcing Is Too Expensive

If outsourcing is too expensive, you’re either not quite ready to take the plunge (that’s okay!) or the options you’re considering aren’t particularly budget-friendly. If anything, outsourcing should save you money in the long run, not only in the physical sense but also in the figurative one — time is money, after all!

Whew! That about covers it. Ultimately, the point of dispelling misinformation is to help merchants make confident, well-informed decisions that lead to growth and long-lasting success. Your elementary school class poster had it right — knowledge really is power!
