Criminal Investigation Opened into Vessel Involved in Baltimore Bridge Collapse

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has begun an investigation probing the container vessel Dali that crashed into Baltmore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge last month, according to multiple media outlets.

The investigation, which is already underway, has now seen FBI investigators boarding the Dali, with dozens of investigators boarding the ship today alone. Multiple teams were present with several small boats pulling up alongside the massive ship.

What exactly is the FBI investigating regarding the Baltimore bridge incident?

As with any federal investigation, details are tightly kept under wraps. However, according to media reports, the investigation centers around a key question: did anyone who was operating the Dali know that there were serious operating issues and set sail anyway?

There is no indication that the FBI is investigating potential terrorism at this time. In a statement, an FBI spokesman said: “The FBI is present aboard the cargo ship Dali conducting court authorized law enforcement activity.”

There are many questions regarding the incident, including who knew what and when.

The City of Baltimore is conducting its own investigation, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott announced today. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also investigating the incident, as is standard procedure for any travel incident including boats, planes, trains, and more.

Sources acknowledged to the Associated Press, anonymously, that alarms were triggered while Dali was still docked at the Port of Baltimore. Whether these alarms were ignored or addressed will surely be part of the ongoing investigation.

We will continue to update our readers as the situation unfolds.
