Drivers traveling in California will need to steer clear of the Big Sur area as the first wildfire of the year is forcing residents to evacuate and close the Pacific Coast Highway 1 near Big Sur. The wildfire known as the Colorado Fire was only 35% contained as of Sunday evening. With Santa Ana winds fueling the fire, it’s hard to say how this fire could impact transportation this week. Be prepared to show proof of your COVID-19 vaccine starting Saturday, January 29, if you plan to cross the border from Mexico or Canada into the US. This restriction applies to all essential foreign workers and has been in the works since October 2021. Trucking capacity will become even tighter as many drivers refuse to be vaccinated and will be looking for loads that do not require them to cross the border. 3. Industry Intel: Data for brokers, carriers, and shippers.

Brokers, Carriers, and Shippers can expect adjustments in spot rates and tender rejections as January comes to a close. FreightWaves Sonar Sightings report for Jan 24 sited that Outbound Tender Volume Index (OTVI) average is 4% higher for last week (y/y). That is not necessarily bad, as spot rates have declined as well as tender rejections. With the Headhaul index increasing over 20%, everyone can expect capacity to tighten.
