Averitt Express opens up new service center in Greensboro, NC region

Cookeville, Tenn.-based freight transportation and logistics services provider Averitt Express announced this week that it recently opened up a new North Carolina-based service center that will augment its service capabilities in Greensboro and the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina.

Averitt said that this new facility is less than 18 miles from downtown Greensboro and is comprised of a 46,0000 square-foot dock and 102 truck doors, in order to handle the flow and distribution of inbound and outbound freight. Averitt’s presence in Greensboro goes back to 1990, when it opened up its previous facility there.

Other components of the new service center include:

  • a mechanic shop with three truck bays, four fueling positions and a drive-through truck wash;
  • a driver support center that provides the company’s local and over-the-road drivers with access to amenities, including wireless internet, laundry machines, workout equipment, showers; and
  • a driver support specialist that is on-call to assist with any questions or needs

“We are excited to increase our ability to serve the business community in and around the Piedmont Triad and the shippers throughout the country that move freight through the region,” said Wayne Spain, Averitt’s president and chief operating officer, in a statement. “Our new service center is nearly double the size of our previous location, and it will allow us to handle the region’s growing volume of freight delivery and distribution needs.”

An Averitt spokesman told LM that over the last 30 years, business has grown for Averitt, in the Greensboro region, for both Averitt and local shippers it serves there.

“Our new facility will enable us to provide more capacity in and out of this growing market,” he said. “With more space available on the dock and in the yard, we can hire more drivers to provide our shippers with more capacity to move their freight.”

As for the biggest advantages this new service center provides, from an Averitt perspective, the spokesman did not hesitate to say that people always come first at Averitt, and, to that end, the company is excited that its new location features a driver support center.

“These facilities provide drivers access to showers, workout equipment, Wi-Fi, a lounge and other amenities that the general public often takes for granted,” he explained. “From that perspective, our new location is competitive when it comes to recruiting and retaining drivers. In terms of service, more volume shippers are embracing pool distribution strategies. The new location provides ample dock space and doors to store freight and to seamlessly move full loads into our less-than-truckload distribution network.”

And he added that a major driver comes back to capacity, noting that capacity is more than just the amount of trucks that a carrier has on the road.

“We must be able to let the drivers unload and load without having to wait in a long queue. Increasing our physical space allows us to keep our customers' freight moving without delay,” he said.
