The Show

Knowing this year’s Super Meeting was going to be different from earlier meetings, Nexstar made sure to seek out the best of the best for the show’s keynote speakers. They included Patrick Lencioni, John Maxwell, Jocko Willink, John Warrillow, and Jack Tester, departing CEO of Nexstar.

While 2020 has been full of uncertainty, Nexstar truly made a commitment to getting each attendee in front of the best leaders for a truly memorable experience. Lencioni, Maxwell, Willink, Warrillow, and Tester delivered incredible perspectives into what it takes to form an efficient team and what it takes to lead effectively.

While each keynote speaker comes from a very different background and built their leadership experience in unique ways, they all brought inspiring points of view to the meeting. It was especially fascinating to compare and contrast the key takeaways from speakers with different backgrounds, such as Willink, who grew his leadership skills with Navy SEAL Teams during his time in Iraq, and Lencioni, whose background is in business and team management. I highly encourage everyone to view their sessions and to look into their respective writings to learn even more about their inspiring experiences.

The 4 Laws of Combat

  1. Cover and Move: The team rules. Each member of a team has a role, and if one fails we can’t move toward our goals. Leaders must work to ensure there’s no friction within the team so that the team can work cohesively.
  2. Simple: Clear and concise direction is essential to having people follow directions, so leaders need to make sure every member of the team understands their role and responsibilities.
  3. Prioritize and Execute: Stay calm and follow the processes laid out in order to complete each initiative effectively; focusing on too many initiatives at once is likely to lead to the failure of them all. Instead, take the time to focus on individual goals and the processes that will help to achieve them. Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast!
  4. Decentralized Command: Each individual needs to make decisions and be a leader in their own right, ensuring that the team is always able to function efficiently and achieve its goals.

Patrick Lencioni: The Motive

  1. Tough conversations can be uncomfortable, but they are necessary to progress.
  2. Team meetings are vital to effective teamwork.
    1. Meetings that are uncomfortable are still beneficial if they serve a purpose.
    2. The better the meeting, the longer it is.
  3. The development of the team is an ongoing endeavor and should be viewed as a constant work in progress.
  4. Communicate with your teams early and often; successful organizations have great communication skills.
  5. The days of simply barking orders to employees are over. The best leaders tailor communications to each employee’s personality, working to foster a more communicative environment.

It’s easy to see that Nexstar went above and beyond to provide members with truly valuable perspective and insight during the Nexstar Super Meeting, but you need to see the sessions for yourself to get the most out of all these inspiring keynote speakers had to share.
