Cosco Orders $1.5 Billion in Megaships – China-based Cosco Holdings Co. announced plans this week to order 11 megaships capable of carrying 19,000 TEUs each.  The vessels will be used in the Asia-Europe trade and reduce shipping cost by roughly 25% compared to smaller boats.

IATA Lobbies Governments for Lithium Battery Oversight – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Portable Rechargeable Battery Association (PRBA) have joined forces to lobby governments for better oversight of the lithium battery industry.  Although several airlines have self-imposed restrictions on bulk shipments of lithium ion batteries, the IATA and PRBA feel that countries need to get more involved.  Suggestions include everything from creating and enforcing packaging guidelines to rooting out counterfeit and low quality manufacturers.
