1. Windy winter weather impacts transportation this week.

The transportation industry can expect winter weather to impact shipments and slow nationwide transportation starting today. Drivers can expect to encounter icy roads, freezing rain, snow, and wind gusts up to 80 mph in Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Wyoming. Carriers in upstate New York can expect a few more inches of snow to slow them down as they travel on I-90 and Interstate 81. 2. FMCSA wants opinions on 18-20 yr olds driving across state lines.

3. Vaccine enforcement to cross-border into Canada is set to begin on Friday!

New COVID-19 vaccine requirements start Jan 15 for drivers wishing to enter Canada. With only 83% of Canadian drivers and 55% of US drivers being fully vaccinated, there could be some disruption to the supply chain for cross-border freight. Approximately 36% of US drivers have said they have no intention of getting the vaccine, which means their decision to leave will decrease capacity for cross-border transportation. 4. ArriveCan app is required to cross the Canadian border.

To enter Canada, everyone must submit their vaccine status to the ArriveCan app starting this Friday. Even Canadian drivers looking to re-enter Canada will be held to strict quarantine and testing measures if they are unvaccinated. CBSA said they “will not compromise the health and safety of Canadians for the sake of border wait times.” Drivers can expect delays at border crossings. Shippers and receivers can expect delays in transit times. The supply chain industry can expect capacity to tighten even more as unvaccinated drivers plan to leave the cross-border freight industry. 5. 2021 holiday shopping data is less than impressive.

Holiday online shopping experienced the slowest growth rate since 2014, even with consumers spending $204.5 billion online. The dismal 8.6% increase in consumer spending from 2020 is attributed to fewer shoppers on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, as retailers had less inventory and offered less-than-exciting discounts.
